2021 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Audi Q5 Design & Utility

The Volvo XC60 and the Audi Q5 are similar enough in size that five passengers can stretch out comfortably in both the front and the rear. When it comes to cargo space, the XC60 has the definite edge on the Q5. With 22.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 63.3 cubic feet when you lay the rear seat flat, it handily beats the Q5, which only offers 54 cubic feet with the rear seat down and the Q5 Sportback model offering even less. A power liftgate comes standard on both SUVs but only the XC60 offers an available hands-free liftgate for extra convenience.

Both the XC60 and the Q5 start with standard 18" wheels or you can upgrade the XC60 to 19" 10-spoke Black Diamond-cut alloy wheels for a sportier appearance. Dual tailpipes with chrome sleeves are also standard on the Volvo XC60 as is a panoramic sunroof and roof rails, perfect for bringing your bike or kayak along for a fun weekend adventure. To get the panoramic sunroof on the Q5, you have to upgrade trim levels and pay more. Stepping up to the Volvo R-Design models delivers even more style and sophistication with exciting R-Design wheels and grille.

Volvo XC60 climate control

2021 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Audi Q5 Comfort & Convenience

Making sure you're surrounded by comfort and the latest technology is something Volvo takes seriously and the XC60 is the perfect example. While both SUVs offer standard leather upholstery, only the XC60 offers available Nappa leather on higher trim levels and heated rear seats, two features not available on the Q5. You can step up trim levels on both vehicles for heated and ventilated front seats to make your morning commute more comfortable, no matter the weather, but only the XC60 offers front seat massage functions to relax you on your way home after a long day.

The latest infotainment systems grace both compact SUVs with large touchscreen displays in the center dash. While the Audi Q5 has a display that's an inch bigger than the XC60's 9" screen, it's horizontally oriented whereas the Volvo display is vertical, giving the driver easier access since the whole screen is conveniently within reach. A quad-zone climate control is available for the XC60 as is wireless charging to keep your devices easily charged on long road trips. The Audi Q5 offers an available premium sound system while the Volvo XC60 gives you two premium sound system options, one from Harman Kardon® and one from Bowers & Wilkins®.

2021 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Audi Q5 Performance

For a driving experience that connects you to your vehicle and the road, the 2021 Volvo XC60 offers three powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid version. The Audi Q5 offers a hybrid version as well but only one gas-powered option, a 4-cylinder that makes 261 horsepower and 273 lb/ft of torque. That may be 11 ponies more than the base engine on the XC60 but if you upgrade to the T6 engine, you'll get a 2.0L turbocharged engine that generates a robust 316 horsepower and 295 lb/ft of torque paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard on the T6 and T8 hybrid engines and an available option on the base model.

2021 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Audi Q5 Safety

If Volvo had a middle name, it would be Safety. The Scandinavian engineering of the 2021 XC60 has earned a five star crash safety test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and was named a 2021 Top Safety Pick+, the highest honor given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. While the 2021 Audi Q5 also received the same awards, the Q5 scored poorer on the headlight tests for the IIHS; the XC60 received higher marks thanks to their LED headlight system.

Volvo XC60 driver assist technology

2021 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Audi Q5 Driver Assist Features

While both luxury compact SUVs come with a suite of driver assist features, the 2021 XC60 delivers much more than the 2021 Q5. While they both offer standard Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Monitor, the Volvo XC60 brings much more to the table. Run-off road mitigation, a feature that will help steer and brake the vehicle if it senses you're unintentionally straying toward the edge of the road, is standard on the XC60. It also offers a standard drowsy driver monitor to ensure that you're not driving while tired or distracted. The Q5 doesn't offer technology of this magnitude at all.
